Measure 4
Make collective transport more attractive

Convenient collective transport is of prime importance. However, the quality of the journey is also important. Provision of safe and attractive walking links to stops is important. The stops and stations themselves also need to have good waiting facilities, which are well lit. Finally, the vehicles themselves need to be comfortable. All three elements are essential components of the public transport journey and it is important to ensure each is of good quality.

Sub-measure 1 (Lobby for) a better quality of journey with public or private collective transport

To achieve modal shift to sustainable (green) modes for the home to work trip the modes have to be of good quality. One of the most important conditions for the use of public or other collective transport is the quality of the trip: how to get to the public transport system, the quality of waiting areas, the comfort of the vehicle itself.

Sub-measure 4 Advice on the use of collective transport

Providing clear information is one of the cheapest measures that can be implemented, but it is essential. Surveys in Germany have shown that about 20% of non-collective transport users do this because of a lack of information. This proportion is higher than the actual modal share of collective transport users.

Sub-measure 5 Marketing and promotion for collective transport

Image and acceptance are more subjective but are definitely reasons why people do not use public or private collective transport. Therefore, publicity campaigns for these modes of transport can be very effective, especially if an existing good service is not well used.
