Measure 6
Improve infrastructure for cycling and walking

High quality infrastructure can encourage employees living nearby to walk or cycle to work. Examples of such infrastructure could be a safe road environment, arrival facilities and, for cycling , the availability of a suitable bike.

Sub-measure 1 Lobby for better walking and cycling infrastructure around the company

Safety and the perceived accident risk is one of the main arguments why the employees don't use bicycles. But there are many possibilities to make cycling and walking to work safert. Most of the actions are the responsibility of local authorities or other road agencies. You can lobby the relevant authorities to provide such improvements in your area.

- Bike and ride

Bike & Ride (bicycle + collective transport) is a typical form of intermodal transport. Employees living in areas not directly served by public transport or company buses use their bicycles to cycle to an efficient collective transport stop (if possible with direct connection to the company). Another form of Bike and Ride is when the employee makes the first part of the home to work trip by public transport and then uses a bicycle for the final leg to the company. This way, the company becomes more accessible from distant stations or bus stops.

- Pool cycles for work-related trips

In cities the bicycle can be an attractive alternative mode of transport for business trips, replacing the car or even public transport. For short distance trips, the bicycle can offer unrivalled speed and convenience, if it is not necessary to carry large or heavy items. The benefit for the company is a cost reduction (reduced car mileage allowance, reduced number of pool cars, reduced parking demand).
