Good cycle infrastructure is important if you want to promote cycling. However other non infrastructure services for cycling can also have an important effect on its image, comfort and success.

 

Sub-measure 1 Free maintenance of bicycles

One way to encourage use of cycling to work is to provide maintenance checks for bicycles. This roadworthiness check should be free to the user.

Sub-measure 2 Financing of cycling, bicycles or cycling equipment

Several kinds of incentives, financial or in kind, can be used to promote the use of bicycles. To encourage the use of the bicycle for home to work trips the company can offer cycle mileage allowance, assisted purchase for cycling equipment, clothing and even for the bicycle itself.

Sub-measure 3 Information on cycling

Often the use of bicycles for the home to work trip is low because people perceive the risk of an accident is very high. Information about cycling routes and safety recommendations can help to allay such fears and encourage drivers to try cycling as an alternative mode of transport.

Infrastructure and organisational measures can encourage cycling to work. However marketing and promotion measures have also proved to be effective.
